The Three Metamorphoses

Tres transformacions de l’esperit us dic: com l’esperit esdevé camell, i el camell lleó, i a l’últim el lleó infant.

Drei Verwandlungen nenne ich euch des Geistes: wie der Geist zum Kameele wird, und zum Löwen das Kameel, und zum Kinde zuletzt der Löwe.

Three metamorphoses of the spirit do I designate to you: how the spirit becometh a camel, the camel a lion, and the lion at last a child.

Hi han moltes coses feixugues per a l’esperit, per a l’esperit fort i sofert, en qui habita la veneració: la seva força deleja coses feixugues i les més feixugues.

Vieles Schwere giebt es dem Geiste, dem starken, tragsamen Geiste, dem Ehrfurcht innewohnt: nach dem Schweren und Schwersten verlangt seine Stärke.

Many heavy things are there for the spirit, the strong load-bearing spirit in which reverence dwelleth: for the heavy and the heaviest longeth its strength.

Què és feixuc? això demana l’esperit sofert, i s’agenolla, igual que el camell, i vol ser ben carregat.

Was ist schwer? so fragt der tragsame Geist, so kniet er nieder, dem Kameele gleich, und will gut beladen sein.

What is heavy? so asketh the load-bearing spirit; then kneeleth it down, like the camel, and wanteth to be well laden.

Què és més feixuc, herois? això demana l’esperit sofert, perquè m’ho pugui carregar al damunt i en la meva força em complagui.

Was ist das Schwerste, ihr Helden? so fragt der tragsame Geist, dass ich es auf mich nehme und meiner Stärke froh werde.

What is the heaviest thing, ye heroes? asketh the load-bearing spirit, that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength.

Que potser no és: humiliar-se per tal de mortificar el propi orgull? Lluir la pròpia beneiteria per tal de mofar-se de la pròpia saviesa?

Ist es nicht das: sich erniedrigen, um seinem Hochmuth wehe zu thun? Seine Thorheit leuchten lassen, um seiner Weisheit zu spotten?

Is it not this: To humiliate oneself in order to mortify one's pride? To exhibit one's folly in order to mock at one's wisdom?

O potser és: apartar-nos de la nostra causa quan ella celebra la seva victòria? Pujar altes muntanyes per tal de temptar el temptador?

Oder ist es das: von unserer Sache scheiden, wenn sie ihren Sieg feiert? Auf hohe Berge steigen, um den Versucher zu versuchen?

Or is it this: To desert our cause when it celebrateth its triumph? To ascend high mountains to tempt the tempter?

O potser és: nodrir-se de glans i herba del coneixement i patir fam de l’ànima per amor de la veritat?

Oder ist es das: sich von Eicheln und Gras der Erkenntniss nähren und um der Wahrheit willen an der Seele Hunger leiden?

Or is it this: To feed on the acorns and grass of knowledge, and for the sake of truth to suffer hunger of soul?

O potser és: estar malalt i engegar els conhortadors, i fer amistat amb sords, que mai no ouen això que vols?

Oder ist es das: krank sein und die Tröster heimschicken und mit Tauben Freundschaft schliessen, die niemals hören, was du willst?

Or is it this: To be sick and dismiss comforters, and make friends of the deaf, who never hear thy requests?

O potser és: ficar-se dins aigua bruta, quan és l’aigua de la veritat, i no treure’s del damunt les fredes granotes i els càlids gripaus?

Oder ist es das: in schmutziges Wasser steigen, wenn es das Wasser der Wahrheit ist, und kalte Frösche und heisse Kröten nicht von sich weisen?

Or is it this: To go into foul water when it is the water of truth, and not disclaim cold frogs and hot toads?

O potser és: estimar aquells que ens menyspreen, i estendre la mà al fantasma quan ens vol fer por?

Oder ist es das: Die lieben, die uns verachten, und dem Gespenste die Hand reichen, wenn es uns fürchten machen will?

Or is it this: To love those who despise us, and give one's hand to the phantom when it is going to frighten us?

Totes aquestes coses, les més feixugues, es carrega l’esperit sofert: igual que el camell, que carregat corre desert endins; així corre ell cap al seu desert.

Alles diess Schwerste nimmt der tragsame Geist auf sich: dem Kameele gleich, das beladen in die Wüste eilt, also eilt er in seine Wüste.

All these heaviest things the load-bearing spirit taketh upon itself: and like the camel, which, when laden, hasteneth into the wilderness, so hasteneth the spirit into its wilderness.

Però en el desert més solitari s'esdevé la segona transformació: l’esperit esdevé lleó, vol caçar la seva llibertat, i ser senyor en el seu propi desert.

Aber in der einsamsten Wüste geschieht die zweite Verwandlung: zum Löwen wird hier der Geist, Freiheit will er sich erbeuten und Herr sein in seiner eignen Wüste.

But in the loneliest wilderness happeneth the second metamorphosis: here the spirit becometh a lion; freedom will it capture, and lordship in its own wilderness.

Hi cerca el seu darrer Senyor: vol esdevenir enemic seu i del seu darrer Déu, per la victòria vol lluitar amb el gran drac.

Seinen letzten Herrn sucht er sich hier: feind will er ihm werden und seinem letzten Gotte, um Sieg will er mit dem grossen Drachen ringen.

Its last Lord it here seeketh: hostile will it be to him, and to its last God; for victory will it struggle with the great dragon.

Qui és el gran drac, que l’esperit ja no en vol dir Senyor ni Déu? «Has-de» es diu el gran drac. Però l’esperit del lleó diu «Vull».

Welches ist der grosse Drache, den der Geist nicht mehr Herr und Gott heissen mag? „Du-sollst" heisst der grosse Drache. Aber der Geist des Löwen sagt „Ich will".

What is the great dragon which the spirit is no longer inclined to call Lord and God? "Thou-shalt," is the great dragon called. But the spirit of the lion saith, "I will."

«Has-de» li barra el pas, espurnejant com l’or, animal cobert d'escates, i en cada escata brilla com l'or «Has-de!».

„Du-sollst" liegt ihm am Wege, goldfunkelnd, ein Schuppenthier, und auf jeder Schuppe glänzt golden „Du-sollst!"

"Thou-shalt," lieth in its path, sparkling with gold- a scale-covered beast; and on every scale glittereth golden, "Thou shalt!"

Valors miŀlenaris brillen en aquestes escates, i així parla el més fort de tots els dracs: «tots els valors de les coses, en mi, brillen».

Tausendjährige Werthe glänzen an diesen Schuppen, und also spricht der mächtigste aller Drachen „aller Werth der Dinge - der glänzt an mir."

The values of a thousand years glitter on those scales, and thus speaketh the mightiest of all dragons: "All the values of things- glitter on me."

«Ja s’han creat tots els valors, i jo sóc tots els valors creats. En veritat, ja no hi té d’haver cap "Vull"» més. Així parla el drac.

„Aller Werth ward schon geschaffen, und aller geschaffene Werth - das bin ich. Wahrlich, es soll kein „Ich will" mehr geben!" Also spricht der Drache.

All values have already been created, and all created values- do I represent. Verily, there shall be no 'I will' any more. Thus speaketh the dragon.

Germans, per què cal el lleó dins l’esperit? Per què no n’hi ha prou amb la bèstia de càrrega, que renuncia i que venera?

Meine Brüder, wozu bedarf es des Löwen im Geiste? Was genügt nicht das lastbare Thier, das entsagt und ehrfürchtig ist?

My brethren, wherefore is there need of the lion in the spirit? Why sufficeth not the beast of burden, which renounceth and is reverent?

Crear valors nous, tampoc el lleó no ho pot fer: però crear-se llibertat per a un nou crear, això sí que ho pot fer el lleó.

Neue Werthe schaffen - das vermag auch der Löwe noch nicht: aber Freiheit sich schaffen zu neuem Schaffen - das vermag die Macht des Löwen.

To create new values- that, even the lion cannot yet accomplish: but to create itself freedom for new creating- that can the might of the lion do.

Crear-se llibertat i un sant No, àdhuc davant del deure: per a això, germans, cal el lleó.

Freiheit sich schaffen und ein heiliges Nein auch vor der Pflicht: dazu, meine Brüder bedarf es des Löwen.

To create itself freedom, and give a holy Nay even unto duty: for that, my brethren, there is need of the lion.

Prendre’s el dret de nous valors, aquesta és la presa més paorosa per a un esperit sofert i reverent. En veritat, això és per a ell robar, i propi d’un rapinyaire.

Recht sich nehmen zu neuen Werthen - das ist das furchtbarste Nehmen für einen tragsamen und ehrfürchtigen Geist. Wahrlich, ein Rauben ist es ihm und eines raubenden Thieres Sache.

To assume the ride to new values- that is the most formidable assumption for a load-bearing and reverent spirit. Verily, unto such a spirit it is preying, and the work of a beast of prey.

Com a cosa seva més sagrada una vegada l’esperit estimà l’«Has-de»: ara té de trobar il·lusió i caprici àdhuc en les coses més sagrades, perquè pugui furtar llibertat del seu amor; i per a aquest furt cal el lleó.

Als sein Heiligstes liebte er einst das „Du-sollst": nun muss er Wahn und Willkür auch noch im Heiligsten finden, dass er sich Freiheit raube von seiner Liebe: des Löwen bedarf es zu diesem Raube.

As its holiest, it once loved "Thou-shalt": now is it forced to find illusion and arbitrariness even in the holiest things, that it may capture freedom from its love: the lion is needed for this capture.

Però digueu, germans: Què pot fer l’infant que ni el lleó no ho podia fer? Per què el lleó rapinyaire té d’esdevenir encara infant?

Aber sagt, meine Brüder, was vermag noch das Kind, das auch der Löwe nicht vermochte? Was muss der raubende Löwe auch noch zum Kinde werden?

But tell me, my brethren, what the child can do, which even the lion could not do? Why hath the preying lion still to become a child?

Innocència és l’infant, i oblit, un nou començament, un joc, una roda que gira sola, un primer moviment, un sant dir-Sí.

Unschuld ist das Kind und Vergessen, ein Neubeginnen, ein Spiel, ein aus sich rollendes Rad, eine erste Bewegung, ein heiliges Ja-sagen.

Innocence is the child, and forgetfulness, a new beginning, a game, a self-rolling wheel, a first movement, a holy Yea.

Sí, per al joc del crear, germans, cal un sant dir-Sí: l’esperit ara vol la seva voluntat, el proscrit del món es guanya ara el seu món.

Ja, zum Spiele des Schaffens, meine Brüder, bedarf es eines heiligen Ja-sagens: seinen Willen will nun der Geist, seine Welt gewinnt sich der Weltverlorene.

Aye, for the game of creating, my brethren, there is needed a holy Yea unto life: its own will, willeth now the spirit; his own world winneth the world's outcast.

Drei Verwandlungen nannte ich euch des Geistes: wie der Geist zum Kameele ward, und zum Löwen das Kameel, und der Löwe zuletzt zum Kinde. --

Three metamorphoses of the spirit have I designated to you: how the spirit became a camel, the camel a lion, and the lion at last a child.
